Why Recording Your Scores Matters in Kilo Classes

At the end of every Kilo class, you’ll hear the coach yell “Don’t forget to record your scores on the whiteboard!” For some people, this is second nature to do. For others, especially newer athletes, this act can feel very uncomfortable and even unnecessary.

But that simple act – putting your name and score on the board – is one of the most valuable habits you can build in your training.

Here’s why it matters.

The whiteboard is more than just numbers – it’s a strong reflection of the effort everyone put in that day.

When you record your score, you’re contributing to the energy of the room and culture we are aiming to create at Kilo. You’re part of something bigger than just your own workout. It creates opportunities for:

  • Celebrating that you just challenged yourself and improved!
  • Conversations about the workout
  • Encouragement between athletes
  • Shared experiences (because let’s be honest, some workouts are a grind for everyone).

Over time, this builds a strong sense of community and connection, which is a huge part of what makes Kilo Classes different from working out on your own or somewhere else.

There’s something very powerful about putting your work out there. It’s uncomfortable and forces you to be vulnerable – especially if you’re not the most proud of your score that day. But, by stepping up and doing it anyway, you are challenging yourself to give as much effort as you have available for that given day – which is a huge part of progress! Challenging yourself to be uncomfortable consistently drives improvement.

Recording your score adds a layer of accountability:

  • It encourages you to give your best effort
  • It keeps you honest about your work
  • It helps you stay consistent over time

It’s not about competing with others – it’s about showing up for yourself and taking ownership of your progress.

When you consistently log your scores, it gives coaches a clearer picture of your progress over time.

This helps them:

  • Guide your weight selections
  • Adjust scaling options
  • Recognize improvements you might not even notice
  • Help you continue progressing safely and effectively

The more information we have, the better we can coach you.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the whiteboard is that it’s only for the “top scores.”

That couldn’t be further from the truth!

The whiteboard isn’t about comparison – it’s about participation.

Whether you’re lifting heavy, scaling movements, modifying for an injury or slowing down and learning during your first few weeks, your score matters because your effort matters.

If you’ve been hesitant to write your name on the whiteboard (which everyone has at some point!), start small. Just show up, do the work and record one small thing about the workout (weight / time / reps / etc.).

Over time, that small habit becomes one of the most powerful tools in your training – helping you stay consistent, connected and continuously improving. And, best of all, it helps you become a member of our amazing community of supportive coaches and members.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the workout you did…

…it’s about the progress you can prove. 💪
